New Mexico School for the Arts

Hundreds Across New Mexico Protest Project Jupiter Data Center: Santa Fe Students Walk Out on Oct. 27 as Lawmaker Plans One-Year Pause Bill
SANTA FE, Santa Fe County, New Mexico — Protests against the large Project Jupiter data center erupted across New Mexico on October 27, drawing hundreds of people statewide. In Santa Fe, students from the New Mexico School for the Arts walked out of class and marched to the State Capitol chanting "Stop Project Jupiter," while some lawmakers attending an interim committee meeting came downstairs to watch.
State Rep. Micaela Lara Cadena said she was energized by the students' action and plans to introduce a bill imposing a one-year pause on new data center projects. In Albuquerque, protesters also gathered outside the office of U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich over his legislation to speed energy project permitting; Heinrich's team responded that the bill includes constraints on data centers.
The protests followed the state Environment Department's October 26 decision not to dismiss Project Jupiter's air quality permit application — a step that only means the application will continue to be reviewed, with a decision deadline of November 23; a public hearing originally set for September has been postponed to December 7. The developer says it has adjusted its microgrid plan to cut project emissions by about 35%.
