Former Norfolk County Sheriff's Office Assistant Superintendent Thomas Brady Sentenced to 20 Months for Ordering Staff to Repair His Home and Tampering With Witnesses

Norfolk County, Massachusetts — The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts announced that Thomas Brady, 55, of Norwood, the former Assistant Superintendent at the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office (NCSO), was sentenced in federal court in Boston to 20 months in prison, two years of supervised release and a $5,000 fine. U.S. District Court Judge Julia E. Kobick imposed the sentence. In June 2026, Brady pleaded guilty to one count of witness tampering and one count of use of interstate facilities to commit bribery and extortion.

From 2021 through May 2023, Brady served as the Assistant Deputy Superintendent for Jail Operations at NCSO and was promoted to Assistant Superintendent in May 2023. In October and November 2022, Brady used his official position to order a subordinate maintenance officer to perform home repairs at his residence during and after work hours. The officer, fearing that refusal would cost him his preferred shift, position or employment, complied: he drove to Brady's residence on October 6, 2022 to troubleshoot the heating system, later replaced the circulator pump, and returned twice on November 1 and 2, 2022 with a second maintenance officer to install a new one.

On June 16, 2023, another NCSO maintenance officer reported Brady to the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission (SEC), which opened an investigation and interviewed the maintenance officers. After learning of the investigation, Brady, on or about October 5, 2023, mailed a handwritten letter to the SEC falsely signed in the reporting officer's name, divulging information about a confidential internal NCSO investigation into one of the witnesses and listing himself as a witness. Federal investigators confirmed that a fingerprint found underneath the postage stamp on the envelope belonged to Brady, and that male DNA recovered from the envelope flap also belonged to Brady.

At sentencing, the court also found as relevant conduct that Brady engaged in a smear campaign against the victims and witnesses, including anonymously sending a letter to a school attended by a minor relative of the reporting officer, falsely accusing the officer of sexually molesting the minor, which triggered an emergency Department of Children and Families investigation based on the false accusation. United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Ted E. Docks, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division, announced the sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lucy Sun of the Public Corruption & Special Prosecutions Unit prosecuted the case.
