Insurance Fraud Cases in Three States: Fake Raft Claim in Idaho, Staged-Crash Allegation in North Carolina, Forgery Charge in South Carolina
Insurance regulators in Idaho, North Carolina and South Carolina brought three fraud enforcement cases detailed in the NAIC NewsWire on October 26, involving a fictitious theft claim, an allegedly staged crash claim and a forgery charge.
In Idaho, Justin Moss of Kuna pleaded guilty on July 17 to two counts of insurance fraud. He copied the serial number of a Maravia Williwaw raft from a for-sale listing and claimed it stolen from Progressive, seeking more than $17,000 for a raft he never owned. On October 7, an Ada County court sentenced him to five years of probation with prison suspended, 60 days in jail, fines and restitution. Idaho Department of Insurance Director Dean L. Cameron commented on the case.
In North Carolina, Lashonda Renee Brown of Wendell was arrested and charged with insurance fraud, obtaining property by false pretense and filing a false police report. She allegedly claimed $6,673.70 from Peak Property and Casualty Insurance Corp. for hit-and-run damage that actually came from a different crash on July 12; her bond was set as a $20,000 secured bond. “Insurance fraud is never a victimless crime. It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums,” Commissioner Mike Causey said.
In South Carolina, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), acting at the Department of Insurance’s request, charged Shante Elizabeth Bethel of Lexington County with forgery valued at $10,000 or more. She was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center, and the case will be prosecuted by the Department of Insurance.
