Italy's Plan to Raise €10.7 Billion More From Banks Draws Criticism From Intesa CEO
ROME — Intesa Sanpaolo CEO Carlo Messina on October 20 criticised Italian government plans to raise an additional €10.7 billion ($12.0 billion) in taxes from banks, insurers and other financial institutions over 2027 to 2029 to help fund the 2027 budget — on top of an extra €12 billion through 2028 already announced in this year's budget package. Speaking at an event in Rome, Messina said the financial sector had agreed a three-year contribution with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni last year and that the government was now changing the terms, arguing other sectors should also help ease energy costs for households and firms. Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has justified higher taxation by pointing to limited competition in the sector and its benefits from ECB rate hikes and state-backed loan guarantees.
