Hungary's 2027 Budget Sparks a Political Clash: Orbán Calls It a Left-Wing Tax-Raising Budget While Prime Minister Magyar Pledges Lawful Accountability
Budapest, Hungary — Hungary's 2027 budget has triggered a political clash. Former prime minister Viktor Orbán posted on social media on Tuesday, October 20, calling the budget announced by Prime Minister Péter Magyar a "left-wing budget" that ends the "work-based economy," and listing his own programme's six pillars, including full employment, Europe's lowest corporate tax, family support, housing, a fourteenth-month pension and utility price cuts.
Orbán's Fidesz party issued a statement saying the new budget raises taxes on businesses and employers, mothers and 138,000 kata small-business owners, and claiming the next instalment of the fourteenth-month pension would not be paid — characterisations from Orbán and Fidesz.
In an Associated Press interview the same day, Magyar said his government will pursue accountability and the recovery of public assets allegedly misused during the Orbán era, stressing that the process must follow the rule of law. The budget dispute is expected to dominate Hungary's autumn parliamentary debates.
