Kansas Man Charged With Threatening to Kill President Trump Ahead of Wichita Speech

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Kansas announced that Jaden J. Read, 24, of Clearwater, Kansas, was charged in a federal criminal complaint filed on October 17 with making threats against the President. Prosecutors say Read posted social media comments vowing to shoot President Donald Trump during his October 19 visit to Wichita, and claimed he had already mapped out rooftops around the speech venue. Read was arrested in Clearwater on October 17 and remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing.

The investigation began on October 15, when a Crime Stoppers tip led authorities to comments Read posted under a KAKE News article about President Trump's upcoming October 19 visit to Wichita. Read wrote: "Let's shoot Trump honestly, where's our shooter? I'm tired of living this money life." Immediately after, he posted a second comment on the same article: "I just got a 308 and 305 round and I'm killing this pedo."

Authorities found Read had made two more threatening comments under an article by KWCH 12 News about the President's visit. In those, he wrote: "Can we shoot him in Kansas please I will myself." One minute later, he added: "IK where your speech will be. Already mapped out roofs around. Finna get kirked since yall couldn't help him."

According to the White House schedule, President Trump is to deliver remarks on the evening of October 19 at Heartland Credit Union Arena in Park City, in the Wichita metropolitan area. Read's threats targeted that visit, and he was arrested two days before it took place.

"Political violence and threats of political violence will not be tolerated," said U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser. "The First Amendment allows for robust disagreement but there are constraints. I caution people to stay within the bounds of constitutionally protected speech."

The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service, the United States Marshals Service, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Wichita Police Department. Under federal law, threatening the President is a felony carrying a statutory maximum of five years in federal prison. A criminal complaint contains only allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
