New Congressional Map Splits Memphis, Putting Neighbors Across the Street in Different Districts
Memphis, in Shelby County, Tennessee, used to sit almost entirely within a single congressional district. A Reuters investigation published October 19 reports that the new map splits the city, placing residents across the street from each other in different districts that also stretch to voters halfway across the state with different needs and interests.
Four years before the Memphis redistricting, Republicans used a similar strategy in drawing new maps for Nashville, the state capital, Reuters reported. The Reuters team examined public funding, demographics and socioeconomic factors in an effort to quantify the impact of redistricting on Tennessee voters.
The story, by Bianca Flowers, David Hood-Nuño and Ally Levine, examines why it matters to residents when a city is split up in this way, as the changed map alters how the city's voters are represented in Congress.
