ATHENS — Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called for stronger EU action to tackle high energy costs, pointing to domestic relief measures announced a day earlier: heating oil prices will be reduced by a total of 40 cents per litre through a combination of government subsidies and refinery discounts, and the heating allowance for the 2026-27 winter season rises by 30 percent, with the maximum payment increasing from 1,200 euros to 1,560 euros, alongside a heating allowance for areas with greater needs ahead of a difficult winter. "Greece currently has one of the lowest heating oil prices in the entire European Union," he said.
Turning to the EU's next Multiannual Financial Framework, Mitsotakis said Greece was not satisfied with the revised long-term budget proposal presented by the Irish Presidency of the EU Council, citing "a substantial inconsistency between the ambition of the goals set by the European Commission and the resources it has made available to achieve those goals".
Greece is among 16 countries in the Friends of Cohesion group, which oppose cuts to the EU's Cohesion Policy and Common Agricultural Policy. "We hope that the negotiations will close at the December European Council, but our 'frugal' friends must also be convinced that we will not accept further cuts to critical pillars of European policy," Mitsotakis said.
