Mural Honoring Slain FDNY EMS Captain Alison Russo Unveiled in Astoria, Queens
New York City is a city in Queens County, New York. A mural honoring FDNY EMS Captain Alison Russo was unveiled on the afternoon of October 17 in Astoria, Queens, as more than 40 EMS and fire personnel and family members gathered at 40-19 20th Avenue, across from Station 49. The LED-lit mural by artists Benny Guerra and Fernando Garcia carries a banner reading "Never Forgotten, Forever a Hero." Russo, a 9/11 first responder, was fatally stabbed in a random street attack by Peter Zisopoulos during her lunch break on September 29, 2022; Zisopoulos was convicted of second-degree murder in 2025 and sentenced to 25 years to life. "It's been a long four years, but she'll never be forgotten," her brother Craig Fuoco said at the unveiling. The building owner angled the mural toward the fire station "so when EMS workers pull out or pull in, she's gonna be smiling at them."
