Shots Fired During Enforcement Operation in Chicago's Little Village; DHS Says Border Patrol Was Fired On from a Black Jeep
Chicago is a city in Cook County, Illinois. At about 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, gunfire was heard near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Border Patrol agents were conducting an immigration enforcement operation in the neighborhood when a man driving a black Jeep fired several shots at the agents and fled. Chicago police, responding to a call of shots fired at federal agents, helped secure the area and said they received no reports of anyone struck.
According to DHS, no agents were injured. The Associated Press, citing official accounts, reported that video circulating on social media showed residents confronting masked federal agents at the roadside, with several sounds like gunshots heard nearby minutes later. DHS also said some people threw paint cans and bricks at Border Patrol vehicles.
Little Village is Chicago's best-known Mexican American neighborhood. Over the past two months, the federal government's immigration enforcement operation in Chicago and its suburbs, codenamed Operation Midway Blitz, has drawn repeated protests. On Friday, U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis ruled to restrict agents' use of force in Chicago, finding portions of the government's earlier submissions "simply not credible." The shooting suspect remains at large and the investigation continues.
