Chicago Council Unanimously Expands Smart Streets Camera Enforcement Program Citywide
Chicago is a city in Cook County, Illinois. Chicago's City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday, October 14, to expand the Smart Streets pilot program and make its camera enforcement permanent, according to local reports and the office of Alderman Daniel La Spata (1st). The program, first launched in 2024, had been scheduled to expire in December 2026.
The program uses cameras mounted on Chicago Transit Authority buses and city vehicles to document drivers illegally blocking bus and bike lanes. Drivers receive a warning for a first violation and fines for subsequent offenses, according to the CTA and the Department of Finance: $90 for standing or parking in a bus lane, $100 at a bus stop, $250 on a bicycle path, $140 for non-commercial parking in a commercial loading zone, $50 to $70 for an expired meter, and $50 for street-cleaning violations.
Supporters say the enforcement keeps bus and bike lanes clear for transit riders and cyclists across the city.
