10月16日，苏黎世联邦理工学院（ETH Zurich）在卢塞恩州罗特（Root）的D4商务村正式启用地球观测能力中心ETH Swiss GeoLab。该中心从宣布筹建到揭幕不到一年，启用仪式由校长若埃尔·梅索（Joël Mesot）与卢塞恩州政府委员法比安·彼得（Fabian Peter）共同迎宾。梅索在致辞中提到布拉滕（Blatten）的山体滑坡以及西藏与尼泊尔边境地区的山洪，指出科学虽不能阻止灾害，但可以帮助及早发现灾害并改善应对处置。

中心还将建设一个基于超级智能的地理信息平台，把卫星与无人机图像、测量站数据结合起来训练新的SI模型，供决策者、研究人员和私营公司使用。平台将与位于卢加诺的瑞士国家超级计算中心（CSCS）合作，该中心的Alps超级计算机已存入约100拍字节的NASA地球观测与气候公开数据。按规划，GeoLab核心团队到2027年底约为10人，到2030年前后将发展成约100人的网络型生态。
ETH Zurich Opens Earth Observation Centre near Lucerne
ETH Zurich opened the ETH Swiss GeoLab, its new competence centre for Earth observation, on October 16, 2026, at the D4 Business Village in Root, near Lucerne, less than a year after the plan was announced. ETH President Joël Mesot and Lucerne Cantonal Councillor Fabian Peter welcomed the guests. Mesot recalled the landslide in Blatten and a flash flood on the Tibet-Nepal border, saying science cannot prevent such disasters but can help detect them early and improve how their consequences are managed.
GeoLab Director Verena Griess said the centre will focus on the early detection of natural hazards and on optimising agriculture and forestry with satellite data. An SI-based geoinformation platform will combine satellite and drone imagery with measuring-station data to train new models for Switzerland, working with the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano, where about 100 petabytes of NASA Earth observation and climate data have been transferred. A pilot project in Valais studies early detection of rockfalls and landslides, and drone radar tests were flown over a glacier in the Lötschental in September. The core team is expected to reach about 10 people by the end of 2027, growing into a network of some 100 experts by around 2030.
