US Treasury Says It Is Working With Cambodia to Dismantle Scam Networks
US Treasury Undersecretary Erin Browne said on October 16 that the Treasury Department has already taken action against scam-centre compounds based in Cambodia and is working closely with the Cambodian government to continue fighting cyber-enabled fraud. Browne made the remarks in Bangkok, where she was attending the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. She added that Washington is working with partners across the Indo-Pacific region to build more resilient and secure supply chains, and would work with Vietnam to explore deeper integration and cooperation. The annual meetings in Bangkok brought together finance and central bank officials from around the world.
Scam compounds operating in Cambodia have drawn sustained international attention in recent years, with several governments imposing sanctions and taking enforcement action against networks running online fraud operations. Cambodian media reported that Prime Minister Hun Manet on the same day called for stronger regional cooperation to combat online scams and transnational crime.
