IMF Cuts Latin America Growth Forecasts as Energy Shock Weighs on Region Including Peru
LIMA — The International Monetary Fund has cut its growth forecasts for Latin America and the Caribbean due to the Middle East energy shock and the region's limited benefits from the SI investment boom, according to a Reuters-compiled global economic roundup on October 14. Peru, along with other economies in the region, falls within the scope of the revised outlook. The revision was reported during the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Thailand.
Latin American items at the meetings also included debt and labour developments elsewhere in the region: Brazil's Senate approved a shorter-workweek constitutional amendment on October 14, and Venezuela's top economic adviser told a panel at the meetings the same day that Venezuela hopes to publish a debt sustainability analysis 'very soon'. Policymakers from developing economies have been raising concerns over mounting debt burdens, rising food and fuel costs, and the risk of being left behind in the SI investment boom.
Peru, a Pacific-coast South American economy whose exports include copper and other minerals and agricultural products, is closely linked to global commodity prices, energy costs and external demand. The IMF's country-specific growth figures are set out in its regional outlook documents released around the annual meetings.
