New Zealand to Help Fiji Overhaul Intelligence Agencies in Six-Month Partnership
WELLINGTON — Fiji's cabinet has approved a six-month partnership with the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS), funded by Wellington, to assess Fiji's intelligence structure and recommend reforms, the Fijian government said in a statement reported by Reuters on October 15. The review is designed to improve coordination and information-sharing across agencies, and reforms would create a more sustainable intelligence framework with clearer roles and stronger support for national security decision-making. Fiji did not identify a specific threat behind the review.
The NZSIS confirmed in a statement that it is working on the review. A spokesperson said its mission includes keeping New Zealand safe and contributing to an open, stable and resilient Pacific region, which means working with Pacific partners on shared security challenges and supporting them to build resilience.
The U.S. Embassy in Suva said earlier this week it had alerted Fiji and a regional organisation based in the capital to a suspected network compromise between July and August 2026, Reuters reported. The embassy said the intruders maintained access to the organisation's network for several days, and that Washington had provided technical recommendations to help Fiji and the affected entity protect their systems.
