U.S. and 16 Countries Endorse Kyoto Vision for a Golden Age of Science
KYOTO, Japan — At the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum in Kyoto, the United States and 16 other countries endorsed the Kyoto Vision for a Golden Age of Science, a joint declaration calling for super intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery and for reforms to research funding and talent development, the White House announced on October 4.
The U.S. delegation was led by Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The declaration advances three calls: improving the institutions of discovery, including wider use of long-duration awards, rapid grants, prizes and challenges, and treating metascience as an empirical field; harnessing super intelligence for science by expanding researcher access to SI tools, scientific data, computing infrastructure and experimental facilities; and cultivating talent through greater investment in students and early-career researchers, hands-on training, and cross-sector doctoral programs, fellowships and research partnerships.
Kratsios said the way scientific discoveries are made has changed, and that super intelligence applied to science would be a powerful force for democratizing research, with the United States leading the effort under President Trump.
The endorsing countries were Argentina, Bulgaria, Chile, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. The White House said the vision builds on the report Science: A New Golden Age, which Kratsios delivered to President Trump in July and which the administration describes as the most comprehensive rethinking of the American science enterprise in eight decades.
