All 600 Red-Light Camera Intersections Now Active in New York City: $50 Tickets, No Points
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn announced on October 21 that red-light cameras are now active at all 600 intersections across the city's five boroughs, reaching the maximum currently allowed under New York state law.
The city was previously authorized for cameras at only 150 intersections; a 2024 state authorization raised the cap to 600. The Department of Transportation began activating the new cameras in January and has completed the expansion ahead of its end-of-2026 schedule. The department said locations were chosen based largely on each intersection's crash history.
Under the city's rules, a red-light camera ticket is $50 and carries no driver's license points, and it is issued to the vehicle's registered owner. When a vehicle crosses the stop line after the light turns red, staff review the images and confirm the plate and violation before a notice is mailed, usually within 30 days, with photos and video viewable online. Owners who neither pay nor dispute within 30 days of the notice date may face an additional $25 penalty. Vehicles registered outside the city are also ticketed: city data show about 39 percent of red-light camera tickets in 2025 went to vehicles registered outside New York City.
The Department of Transportation says red-light running has fallen by more than 80 percent at intersections with cameras, side-impact crashes by about 65 percent and rear-end crashes by about 49 percent, and that about 22 percent of fatal intersection crashes in New York City from 2023 to 2025 involved red-light running.
