New York City Releases 40,000 More 9/11 Documents: Public Total Tops 60,000, With More Batches Due in Coming Months

New York City, in New York State, posted an additional 40,000 September 11-related documents to the NYC September 11th Records Portal on October 21, the second batch of such records the city has released. Together with the 22,000 documents already available, the public total now exceeds 60,000, according to a statement issued the same day by the watchdog group 911 Health Watch.

The release is the second installment under a court agreement between 911 Health Watch and the administration of Mayor Mamdani, settling a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit the group filed against the city Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Mayor's Office, with more batches to come in the following months. The first batch ran to more than 170,000 pages; in an October 8 release, the group said its initial review found that the size and scope of the air quality problems around Ground Zero were recognized at the time.

Benjamin Chevat, executive director of 911 Health Watch, said the terrorists bear responsibility for those who died that day and for those still suffering health impacts 25 years later, but that the released record shows the city, state and federal governments did not change course once the hazards were realized. Andrew Carboy, pro bono counsel for the group, said the city for years denied the records existed or could be located, and that a ruling by Justice Clynes in the group's favor paved the way for the disclosures. Carboy and fellow pro bono counsel Mathew McCauley said Corporation Counsel Steve Banks kept to the promised timeline for the second release, and that the group has begun reviewing the new documents.
