The City of Sacramento, in Sacramento County, California, is recruiting two Assistant City Managers, with an annual salary range of $242,215.51 to $340,812.60 depending on qualifications. The Assistant City Manager reports directly to the City Manager and serves on the city executive team, providing executive oversight for an assigned portfolio of departments, leading implementation of citywide strategy and council priorities, coordinating across departments, and delivering on policy, operations and performance. The role may act for the City Manager as needed. The city government has 13 departments, about 4,884 full-time-equivalent employees and a fiscal 2026/27 budget of $1.7 billion.
The posted salary range is $242,215.51 to $340,812.60. The recruitment notice adds that the bottom of the range is expected to rise to $264,339.25, subject to City Council approval; that increase has not yet taken effect.
Requirements include seven or more years of senior government management experience covering budget, strategic planning, policy and procedures, and personnel management, ideally in a metropolitan area of more than 200,000 people; a bachelor's degree in business or public administration or a related field, with a graduate degree preferred; three years as a department head with full authority may substitute for part of the experience requirement; a valid California Class C driver's license at appointment; and residence in the Sacramento area or the ability to respond as needed. Virtual interviews are tentatively set for the week of November 16 and on-site interviews for the week of November 30.
