Wyoming's Congressional Delegation Moves Into the Minority; Barrasso and Two Others Face Limits on Legislative Influence
WYOMING — Wyoming's congressional delegation will move into the minority when the new Congress is seated in January, and the state's three Republican federal lawmakers will face limits on their legislative influence. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported on November 7 that Democrats will control both the Senate and the House in January, leaving Wyoming's Senator John Barrasso, Senator-elect Harriet Hageman and Representative-elect Chuck Gray to work from the minority. Hageman was elected to the Senate this week and will succeed Cynthia Lummis as a freshman senator; Gray, the current secretary of state, will become Wyoming's next U.S. representative. Barrasso has served as Senate majority whip since January 2025 and is expected to become minority whip, a role very different from its majority counterpart. Ryan Williamson, an associate professor of political science at the University of Wyoming, said the three will face procedural and structural obstacles and will struggle to shape policy and the legislative agenda. Democrats are projected to flip seven Republican Senate seats and to win their largest House majority since the early 1990s, with exact numbers still hinging on final counts in states such as Alaska and Mississippi.
