Allergan Aesthetics: Two Phase 4 Studies Show Higher Facial Satisfaction in Adults on GLP-1 Medications, 95.7% Say They Still Look Like Themselves
Irvine, California — Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company (NYSE: ABBV), announced results on November 8 from two Phase 4 studies of aesthetic treatment in adults on glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications. The data were presented at the 2026 American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Annual Meeting, held November 5-8 in San Diego, California.
People taking GLP-1 medications for weight loss may experience facial changes, including loss of facial volume and changes in skin quality. HARMONY IN DIVERSITY is the first study to evaluate a neurotoxin combined with hyaluronic acid (HA) injectables in this population. In its medical weight loss cohort, 30 adults on stable doses of GLP-1 medications received HA injectables, onabotulinumtoxinA and a study-specified skincare regimen; mean FACE-Q Satisfaction With Facial Appearance improved by a statistically significant 42.4 points from before treatment to 30 days after onabotulinumtoxinA treatment, with statistically significant improvements in skin quality, psychological function and social function. Most treatment-related treatment-emergent adverse events were mild, nonserious and resolved without intervention, and there was no evidence of distant spread of toxin.
In HALO, a second Phase 4 study of HA injectables across the face, an interim analysis of 25 adults on GLP-1 medications showed a 39.6-point mean improvement in FACE-Q Satisfaction With Facial Appearance at month 3. In addition, 95.7% of participants were satisfied or very satisfied that they still looked like themselves, 82.6% were satisfied or very satisfied with how natural they looked, and 88% were satisfied with how natural their skin looks. Most treatment-related adverse events reported at the time of the interim analysis were mild and nonserious. Both studies were prospective, multicenter and open-label, and used validated patient questionnaires scored from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better outcomes.
“Patients on GLP-1 medications are navigating real changes in how their face looks, and those changes can affect their self-image and how they engage with others,” said Joely Kaufman-Janette, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and study investigator. “Having data specific to this population gives us a clearer starting point for setting expectations and building a treatment plan that reflects what they're experiencing.” Darin Messina, Ph.D., senior vice president and head of aesthetics research and development at AbbVie, said the company's research is designed around the patients it serves, including people taking GLP-1 medications for weight management, whose aesthetic concerns can change over time and may call for more than one treatment approach.
HARMONY IN DIVERSITY enrolled 130 adults across 10 U.S. sites; its first cohort of 100 participants ages 22-65 received multimodal treatment of the face and neck and recorded a 42.0-point mean improvement in facial appearance satisfaction. Allergan Aesthetics also presented an exploratory digital image analysis of the investigational neurotoxin trenibotulinumtoxinE (trenibotE), studies of a fibroblast-derived exosome serum for skin quality, and research on treatment sequencing for abdominal body contouring at the meeting.
