New York Makes $27 Million Available for Innovative Alternative Fuels, Awards Nearly $10 Million to Five Projects

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on November 5 that $27 million is now available through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to advance innovative alternative fuel solutions in the state, and that nearly $10 million has been awarded to five projects to develop, pilot and enhance the safety of alternative fuel technologies. The funding, available through NYSERDA's Advanced Fuels & Thermal Energy Research program, targets hard-to-electrify sectors such as aviation, heavy-duty freight, maritime and rail, along with back-up power.

"As New York confronts energy challenges no generation has faced before, these grants will help develop innovative fuel solutions that not only strengthen our energy independence but do so while reducing emissions, holding down costs, and preserving grid reliability," Governor Hochul said. NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris said advancing promising alternative fuels from concept to real-world application is critical to understanding their potential and accelerating deployment.

The competitive Drop-in Alternative Fuels Innovation Projects solicitation seeks proposals from developers, technology firms, manufacturers and research organizations to produce eligible fuels including sustainable aviation fuel, renewable natural gas, renewable diesel, low-carbon methanol and renewable propane; ammonia, raw biogas, biodiesel and hydrogen are not eligible finished products. Projects must be sited in New York and fall in pilot, demonstration or first-of-a-kind commercial categories, with a minimum 50 percent cost share from non-NYSERDA sources. Rolling submissions are accepted until December 31, 2029, at 3 p.m. ET or until all funds are committed, and NYSERDA will respond within three weeks to letters of intent on eligibility.

The five awarded projects are all New York-based: the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' Center for Hydrogen Safety received $850,000 to develop hydrogen safety training for first responders and permitting officials; the Fire Department of the City of New York received $200,000 to build department-wide capability to respond to hydrogen emergencies; Hydroplane, Ltd. received nearly $2 million to design and build a prototype hydrogen fuel cell-electric cargo watercraft; Noblehurst Green Energy received more than $4 million to build a pilot plant at Noblehurst Farms in Pavilion turning waste biogas into sustainable aviation fuel; and SWITCH Maritime LLC received more than $2.5 million to design and demonstrate a tug-propelled barge platform carrying hydrogen to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
