[Video] County Video Spotlights Barbering Program Letting Incarcerated Youth Earn a State License
[Video] LOS ANGELES - A barbering program run by the Los Angeles County Probation Department in partnership with Santa Monica College is featured in a new video released by the official County of Los Angeles channel, showing incarcerated youth learning barbering skills toward a California state barbering license and an economic footing when they are released.
The program formally launched on October 24 at the Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall / Secure Youth Treatment Facility in Sylmar, a partnership between the Probation Department, Santa Monica College and barber VicBlends. The county's video, titled "Youth find career on the cutting edge" and released on November 6, runs 2 minutes 32 seconds and shows students at work in hands-on barbering training.
Applicants submitted essays explaining their interest in the training. Probation and Santa Monica College are working with state officials so that students who meet state requirements can take the licensing examination at the facility. The program meets Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon, with the first cohort expected to graduate in fall 2027.
Two classrooms at the facility were remodeled for the program, including a modern, state-of-the-art barber studio for academic instruction and hands-on practice.
In the video description, the county says the partnership provides incarcerated youth the opportunity to earn their state barbering license and economic footing when released. Career training of this kind is meant to help young people leave custody with a sustainable skill for employment and a new start.
