Thanksgiving Need Hits 12-Year High: Food Bank of the Rockies Distributes Nearly 200,000 Meals a Day
As Thanksgiving approaches, the need for food assistance in Colorado and Wyoming has reached its highest level in 12 years, according to Food Bank of the Rockies. The organization said 1 in 8 individuals — including 1 in 5 children — is experiencing hunger within its service area. It is now distributing enough food for nearly 200,000 meals per day, and distributed enough food for nearly 73 million meals in the last fiscal year.
Food Bank of the Rockies provides food assistance to individuals and families across Colorado and Wyoming through a network of more than 700 Hunger Relief Partners and its Mobile Pantry Program. The organization said every $1 donated helps provide enough food for 3 meals, and 94 cents of every dollar goes directly to local food distribution. Families in need of food can use the Food Finder tool on the organization's website to find the distribution nearest them.
The organization's Thanksgiving campaign is under way, and community members can donate, volunteer, or host a virtual Thanksgiving food drive. Thanksgiving donations will help provide turkey, stuffing, fresh produce and other food assistance across Denver, the surrounding metro region, the eastern plains and the Western Slope. Volunteers can also work at the organization's Aurora Distribution Center or at its mobile pantries.
Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of the year for food banks across the country. Other food banks are running Thanksgiving drives at the same time: the Food Bank of Delaware's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive asks for donations by noon on Friday, November 13, and has added a virtual food drive for the first time this year, while the Food Bank of Wyoming is partnering with Smith's grocery stores on food drives statewide from November 1 to 15 and donating 100 hams to partners in Casper.
