A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck 74 kilometers northeast of Hasaki, Japan, at 11:07 UTC on November 7, 2026, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located at 36.188 degrees north latitude and 141.440 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 31.7 kilometers. Hasaki is a coastal district of Kamisu in Ibaraki Prefecture, on Japan's Pacific coast of eastern Honshu, and the epicenter lay offshore to its northeast.
USGS issued a green alert for this event, indicating a low likelihood of casualties or damage, with a maximum estimated intensity of IV on the Modified Mercalli scale. Based on the earthquake's location and available data, there is no tsunami threat associated with this event, and no tsunami warning was issued. About ten felt reports had been submitted to USGS at the time of its update.
The quake is the latest in a run of moderate events off eastern Japan: a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck 144 kilometers southeast of Hasaki on November 6, and a separate magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck 10 kilometers northwest of Hamakita in Shizuoka Prefecture later on November 7 — a distinct event with a different USGS event number and epicenter. Earthquake parameters are as measured by USGS and may be revised.
