Newsom Proclaims November Native American Heritage Month in California
California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation in Sacramento on November 6 declaring November 2026 as "Native American Heritage Month" in California, the final such proclamation of his term.
The proclamation recalls that long before statehood, California was home to the largest and most diverse population of Native people north of what is now Mexico, and that California Native peoples remain present today, leading and shaping the lands and waters of their ancestors. Since the Governor's early apology to California Native peoples, the state has returned more than 100,000 acres of land backed by over $200 million, and invested hundreds of millions more in tribal clean energy and housing. In partnership with tribes, California completed the largest river restoration in the nation's history and has supported Native stewardship of the land, including habitat restoration, species reintroduction and cultural burning. The proclamation also cites investments in broadband, tribal colleges, justice systems, behavioral health and services for Native people with developmental disabilities.
The proclamation also notes that this week Deb Haaland became the first Native American woman elected governor, and Peggy Flanagan the first Native American woman elected to the U.S. Senate, in the 250-year history of the United States. Newsom called on all Californians to learn more about Native people across the United States.
On the same day, the Governor's administration joined tribal leaders in West Sacramento, Yolo County, to open Phase 1 of the California Indian Heritage Center.
