Milwaukee Council Unanimously Approves $2.27 Billion Budget, Funds Study of Municipalizing We Energies
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — After nearly four hours of debate, the Milwaukee Common Council on November 6 unanimously approved a $2.27 billion city budget for 2027. The budget reallocates parts of Mayor Cavalier Johnson's proposal: $2.5 million is shifted from the Police Department to the Fire Department and other priorities; Sunday hours at four library branches are preserved, though cut from seven hours to four; and a planned 2% raise for general city employees is restructured to give the largest increases to the lowest-paid workers.
The budget levies $343.6 million in property taxes, up 2% from $336.8 million in 2026. A typical home assessed at $207,400 in 2027 would face an annual city property tax bill of about $1,514, roughly $47 more than this year. The council also unanimously backed borrowing $1.35 million to study the process and cost of municipalizing We Energies' assets. The mayor has until November 17 to decide on vetoes, and the council will take up any vetoes on November 24.
