South Portland Voters Reject $88.6 Million Public Safety Bond, Shelving Police and Fire Station Plans
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Voters in South Portland rejected an $88.6 million public safety bond on November 3, with 63% voting against it: 8,658 votes against and 5,002 in favor.
The bond would have provided $44.35 million for a new police station on a former Walgreens site at Cash Corner that the city bought earlier this year for $2.5 million, and $44.25 million for a new fire station to be rebuilt on the site of the existing one. Had it passed, the bond would have addressed the aging facilities of both the city's police and fire departments at once.
The vote was held on November 3, the same day as the midterm elections, and the no votes outnumbered the yes votes by about 3,656. The package combined the police and fire stations into a single borrowing measure, and voters rejected it by roughly two to one.
The city government has not yet said what it will do next, and both projects are currently without a funding source.
