Shutdown Day 37: FAA Flight Cuts Take Effect November 7, Starting at 4% at 40 Busy Airports
WASHINGTON — The U.S. federal government shutdown entered its 37th day on November 6, extending the longest shutdown in American history. The Federal Aviation Administration announced the flight reductions on November 6, with the order taking effect on November 7: an initial cut of about 4% of flights at 40 busy airports nationwide, rising gradually to 10%.
About 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration screeners have worked without pay for more than a month, and controller shortages have caused tens of thousands of flight delays across the country. Reuters estimated that at least 3.2 million travelers have been affected. Airlines spent Thursday adjusting schedules and notifying passengers.
The shutdown began on October 1, and the parties remain deadlocked over the expiring Affordable Care Act health insurance subsidies: Democrats insist a funding bill must extend the subsidies, while Republicans want to pass a stopgap bill first to keep the government running through November 21 and negotiate the subsidies afterward. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said earlier that the Senate would vote Friday on a stopgap bill to reopen the government.
