Route 66 Turns 100 on November 11: Tulsa Hosts an All-Day Celebration With a Veterans Parade, a Centennial Crawl and Free Concerts
Route 66 turns 100 on November 11. Designated on November 11, 1926, the 2,448-mile highway runs from Chicago to Santa Monica, California, across Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California, and is known as the Mother Road. The official centennial celebration is centered in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, which bills itself as the Capital of Route 66.
Festivities run from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., mostly free. The Tulsa Veterans Day Parade steps off at 11 a.m.; from 1 to 5 p.m. the Centennial Crawl opens ten downtown cultural venues free of charge, including the Woody Guthrie Center and the Bob Dylan Center, handing out the wristbands needed for the Main Street party. A street party follows from 3 p.m., the official Centennial Moment is marked at 5 p.m., and Bob Wills' Texas Playboys play a free concert on Guthrie Green at 6 p.m.; the centennial concert at Cain's Ballroom is sold out.
The celebration is presented by the Oklahoma Route 66 Centennial Commission and Cherokee Nation Businesses. All eight Route 66 states are marking the centennial year; the official calendar is at the Route 66 centennial website.
