DC Police Seek Suspect in New York Avenue Shooting, Release Video; Reward Up to $10,000
The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia on November 5 asked for the community's help identifying a suspect who shot a bystander in Northeast Washington, releasing surveillance video and offering a reward of up to $10,000.
On Thursday, September 24, 2026, at approximately 5:35 p.m., the suspect stole items from a store in the 1500 block of New York Avenue, Northeast. As he exited, two employees, including an armed special police officer, confronted him. The suspect assaulted them and used pepper spray, then gained control of the special police officer's firearm and fired one round, striking an uninvolved bystander. The officer regained control of the weapon before the suspect fled the scene on a scooter.
The bystander and the special police officer were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The second employee was not injured. The suspect was captured by nearby video cameras, and police released the video and a photo (CCN: 26136749).
Anyone who can identify the suspect or has knowledge of the incident should take no action but call police at (202) 727-9099 or text a tip to the department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411. The Metropolitan Police Department offers a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible for a crime committed in the District of Columbia.
