Boston named sole U.S. winner of the 2025 Bloomberg Philanthropies Local Leaders Climate Award
Boston was announced on November 5 as a winner of the 2025 Bloomberg Philanthropies Local Leaders Climate Award, the only U.S. city among this year's winners. The awards were unveiled on November 4 at the COP30 Local Leaders Forum in Rio de Janeiro, with Boston winning in the Energy Transition and Smarter Buildings category.
The award recognizes Boston's Building Emissions Reduction and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO) and its Equitable Emissions Investment Fund. Large buildings account for roughly 40% of Boston's greenhouse gas emissions; the ordinance requires large buildings to cut emissions over time, and the fund helps building owners share the cost of retrofits.
Mayor Michelle Wu said the award affirms Boston's work pairing climate action with community equity. Now in its ninth edition, the award has six categories honoring local policies and programs that have effectively addressed climate change over the past three years. (Source: City of Boston)
