Family-Run Dim Sum Spot Tsang's Coming to Magazine Street in New Orleans This Fall

Uptown New Orleans is about to welcome a family-run, authentic Chinese dim sum restaurant. Tsang's Dim Sum & Bar will open this fall at 5538 Magazine Street, taking over the former Medium Rare space. The restaurant is run by Bonnie Ceng and her mother, Judy Ceng; the parents' generation previously operated three successful Chinese restaurants locally before retiring, and the next generation is now carrying on the family's Chinese restaurant business. The new spot will focus on handmade dim sum and bao, with a menu blending nostalgic classics and contemporary touches, and particular attention to the craft and flavor of its dumplings. Bonnie Ceng says New Orleans deserves a deeper Chinese food scene, that Chinese cooking and presentation are an art in themselves, and that she hopes diners will move beyond the usual takeout impression to appreciate the refinement of Chinese cuisine. The space is under renovation, with a design blending traditional Chinese aesthetics and modern style to create a dining room with Chinese character that fits the Uptown atmosphere. Magazine Street is one of New Orleans' most vibrant commercial streets, lined with restaurants, cafes and shops, and Tsang's will add an authentic Chinese dim sum house to it. Chinese immigration to New Orleans dates to the mid-19th century, when Chinese residents ran a dried shrimp export business in the French Quarter and left a deep mark; today, Chinese restaurants and community groups continue to contribute to the city's diverse food map. The Cengs say an exact opening date will be announced later, and they look forward to meeting diners this fall.
