Ohio Governor DeWine Says He Won't Back Weakening the Next Governor's Powers as Acton Launches Transition
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said on November 5 that he would not support any attempt by the Republican-controlled legislature to weaken the governor's powers before Amy Acton takes office in January. Speaking to reporters at a post-election conference hosted by the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, DeWine said he did not believe any governor would approve sweeping changes to the office's powers and that doing so would be inappropriate. Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy on November 3 to become the first Democrat elected Ohio governor in 20 years, and attention has turned to whether Republicans might curb executive power during December's lame-duck session, as they did to DeWine during the COVID-19 pandemic. Republican Bill Reineke, expected to become Senate president in January, said Senate Republicans have not collectively discussed limiting the governor's powers and that he has called Acton to congratulate her. DeWine also said he and his wife, Fran DeWine, met with the Actons at the governor's residence on November 4 and offered the incoming administration his assistance. Acton formally launched her transition on November 5, appointing John Haseley, a former chief of staff to Governor Ted Strickland, to lead it.
