Hawaii Reports 11th Travel-Related Dengue Case of the Year
The Hawaii Department of Health reported on November 4 a new travel-related dengue case on Oahu, bringing the state's total for the year to 11. The department said the patient was infected while traveling to a region where dengue is endemic, and that no link has been found to previously reported cases in Hawaii. Health teams have been sent to the relevant area for inspections and mosquito control, and residents are reminded to eliminate standing water and guard against mosquito bites. Dengue is spread by mosquitoes; symptoms include fever, headache, joint pain and rash. Most patients recover on their own, though a small number can develop severe illness. Of the 11 cases reported this year, the department said, 10 were linked to travel to Pacific island countries and territories and one to travel to a dengue-endemic region outside the Pacific; all were imported, and no local transmission chain has been found in the state. The department urged residents who have recently traveled to dengue-endemic areas to seek medical care promptly if symptoms appear, tell providers about their travel history, and cooperate with mosquito control efforts.
