Mamdani Elected New York Mayor With 50.4% as Turnout Tops 2 Million, Highest Since 1969
New York City's mayoral election was decided on Nov. 5: Democrat Zohran Mamdani won with 50.4% of the vote to become the city's 111th mayor, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, at 41.6%, and Republican Curtis Sliwa at 7.1%. With more than 90% of ballots counted, over 2 million New Yorkers voted — the highest turnout since 1969.
Mamdani, 34, will be sworn in on Jan. 1, 2027, becoming the city's youngest mayor in a century and its first Muslim mayor. On election night, Nov. 4, he celebrated at the Brooklyn Paramount theater with his wife, Rama Duwaji, and his parents. He carried four of the city's five boroughs, with his largest margins in Brooklyn.
A state assemblyman from Astoria, Queens, Mamdani identifies as a democratic socialist and campaigned on affordability, promising free buses and universal child care — pledges whose delivery will require cooperation from the state government. Governor Kathy Hochul won re-election with 76% of the vote in the city, and Mamdani's supporters were credited with boosting Democratic turnout citywide. He will now assemble a transition team and in January succeeds Mayor Eric Adams, who abandoned his re-election bid amid low approval ratings.
