On November 4, Pennsylvania health officials reported the state's sixth measles-associated death this year as the outbreak continued to spread. Reuters reported that, as of November 4, Pennsylvania had recorded 1,467 confirmed measles cases, including 283 hospitalizations, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Pennsylvania has been the epicenter of the 2026 U.S. measles outbreak, accounting for a substantial share of infections reported nationwide. The latest death comes days after New York state reported its first measles-associated child death in more than 30 years. GSM reported on November 2 that Pennsylvania then stood at 1,433 cases, 269 hospitalizations and five deaths.
Measles is an acute respiratory illness caused by the measles virus. It is extremely contagious and spreads through the air and droplets, with symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis and a body-wide rash; severe cases can lead to pneumonia, encephalitis and death. Health officials say people who are not fully vaccinated face the highest risk and that measles vaccination is the most effective prevention. The Pennsylvania Department of Health continues to trace case contacts, urges medical facilities to maintain isolation and reporting, and calls on parents to check children's vaccination records and catch up on doses. The CDC recommends children receive a measles-containing vaccine dose at 12 to 15 months and again at 4 to 6 years, and adults unsure of their vaccination history should consult a doctor. Anyone with fever and a rash during the outbreak should phone a medical facility first rather than going directly to a waiting room.
