Follow-Up: San Juan River Floodwaters Recede in Farmington, New Mexico, on November 4 as Cleanup and Recovery Begin
On November 4, floodwaters on the San Juan River in northwestern New Mexico showed signs of receding, and affected areas began shifting from emergency evacuation to cleanup and recovery. The Weather Channel reported on November 4 that after nearly two weeks of on-and-off heavy rain, skies were clearing across parts of the Southwest, and rivers near Farmington and Shiprock crested at levels lower than forecast, easing the worst of the flooding. San Juan County spokesperson Devin Neeley said major rivers in the area remained above flood stage, but the county would likely soon lift evacuation orders affecting at least 20,000 residents and turn its focus to recovery. The flooding has killed one person, and police suspect a second death was weather-related.
More than 20 trillion gallons of rain fell on the Four Corners states and Nevada over the past two weeks, according to the report. As waters recede, homeowners and business owners face mud-caked cleanup work, with some homes badly damaged. Residents should continue to follow local evacuation and road-closure orders and not return to low-lying flooded areas until officials confirm it is safe.
