Miami Star Malachi Toney Injured at Practice, May Miss Key Game at Notre Dame
The University of Miami Hurricanes, in Miami-Dade County, Florida, received bad news on November 4: their best player, wide receiver Malachi Toney, rolled his ankle at practice, and his status for the November 7 road game at Notre Dame is in doubt. Multiple reports on the evening of November 4 said Toney was caught up with a cornerback at practice; what was initially reported as not long-term was later reported as a high ankle sprain requiring surgery that will keep him out for an extended period.
Miami said in a statement that Toney sustained an injury during Wednesday's practice and is undergoing further evaluation by the team's medical staff, without giving a return timetable. Recovery from a high ankle sprain typically takes about four weeks, which would cover the rest of Miami's regular-season schedule. Toney, a Heisman Trophy front-runner, fell to fourth in the betting odds after the injury news.
The injury comes at a critical moment. Miami is 8-0 and ranked No. 1, and the November 7 game at Notre Dame is its biggest of the regular season. The first round of the College Football Playoff is December 18-19, about six weeks away, and Toney's availability for the playoff is also uncertain.
