Pennsylvania Distributes $427 Million in Municipal Pension Aid to 1,441 Municipalities
Pennsylvania Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor announced in Moon Township, Allegheny County, on November 4 that 1,441 municipalities and regional departments across the state have received a total of $427,788,682.09 in state aid to support municipal pension plans covering police officers, paid firefighters and non-uniformed employees.
DeFoor announced the aid together with state Sen. Devlin Robinson and state Rep. Valerie Gaydos. By region, the Greater Pittsburgh area received $90,178,161.01 and the Southeast/Greater Philadelphia area received $181,856,819.10, with the remainder distributed across the rest of the state. Allocation details by municipality are available on the Auditor General's website. This year's allocation also includes the first cost-of-living adjustment for municipal police and firefighters since 2002.
The aid is part of Pennsylvania's annual municipal pension assistance program, funded by a 2 percent tax on fire and casualty insurance policies sold in Pennsylvania by out-of-state companies, and is intended to help local governments keep their retirement commitments to front-line public servants. "State pension aid helps to make sure municipalities can keep their promises to retired employees who spent decades serving their communities, often performing very dangerous work," DeFoor said. "This funding also helps to reduce burdens on local taxpayers."
