Temple University's 'Philadelphia Unfolded' Showcases Chinatown History Through Dec. 13
Temple University's Charles Library is hosting 'Philadelphia Unfolded,' an exhibition of historic photographs and works by Chinese-American pop-up book artist Colette Fu that traces the changing face of a diverse city, Broad Street Review reported on November 3. The show runs through December 13. In one piece, a photograph from October 1965 shows a toddler waving a small flag at a Chinatown parade; lifting the image reveals the same child superimposed over a color streetscape of today's Chinatown. Another work pairs 1970s photographs of protesters blocking construction of the Vine Street Expressway with a red banner reading 'We won... no more stadium!' — documenting two fights in which Chinatown defended its community space.
Fu's parents came to the United States in the 1950s. Her large installation 'Noodle Mountain' uses curved, bright-yellow noodles to symbolize the Chinese immigrant experience; in its symbolism, red stands for blood shed in labor conflicts, flames for a burned Chinatown, salmon for Chinese fish-processing workers, and curved rails for the Chinese laborers who built the transcontinental railroad. The historic photographs come from the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin collection held by Temple University Libraries' Special Collections Research Center. The exhibition is on the first floor of Charles Library, 1900 N. 13th Street.
