White House: Prescription Drug Prices Fell 4.5% Year Over Year, the Largest Drop Since 1963
WASHINGTON — The White House said on November 3, citing the latest inflation data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, that U.S. prescription drug prices fell 4.5 percent year over year, the largest year-over-year decline since 1963, while the overall Consumer Price Index rose 3.7 percent and nonprescription drug prices fell 0.9 percent.
The White House release quoted an analysis by Dr. Joel Zinberg in City Journal noting that the consumer price index for prescription drugs has either fallen or been flat every month of 2026. The analysis credited TrumpRx, launched in February 2026, as a major factor: the platform provides cash-paying patients with large discounts on more than 800 drugs, including many of the most popular medicines, with GLP-1 weight-loss drugs a particular focus of the discounts.
The analysis also cited agreements with Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk that reduce the cost of GLP-1 medications for government programs and TrumpRx while expanding Medicare coverage for obesity treatment with a $50 monthly copay. U.S. prescription drug spending surged in 2025, driven by the GLP-1 drugs tirzepatide and semaglutide, at approximately $60 billion each.
Zinberg noted that less than a third of employer-provided health plans cover GLP-1 drugs for obesity, so TrumpRx prices are most valuable to uninsured patients and those whose plans do not cover the treatment, and that low, transparent prices create downward pressure on drug prices in all insurance plans.
