First Midterm Exit Polls: 43% of Voters Say a Reason for Their Vote Was to Express Opposition to Trump, Whose Job Approval Stands at 38%
The first wave of NBC News exit poll results from the November 3 midterm elections shows 43 percent of voters saying a reason for their vote was to express opposition to President Donald Trump, against just 16 percent who said they voted to express support; nearly half of voters said they viewed the election as an opportunity to deliver a major rebuke of Trump's performance. The opposition share is far higher than in the 2018 midterms.
Trump's job approval stood at 38 percent in the exit poll, with 62 percent disapproving; CBS News' exit poll also put his approval at 38 percent, the lowest for a president on a midterm election day in nearly two decades. In the 2018 midterms his approval was 45 percent. CNN's Voter Poll found 71 percent of voters saying Congress is not doing enough to check the president.
Both parties were viewed poorly: 59 percent of voters held an unfavourable view of the Republican Party and 54 percent of the Democratic Party in the NBC poll. Prices were among voters' top concerns, with about six in ten House voters saying higher-than-usual prices are more the result of Trump's policies.
Turnout was strong in many states: South Carolina's Election Commission said more than 1.9 million ballots had been cast in the state, 56 percent of registered voters, the highest in 30 years. Exit polls combine interviews with voters leaving polling places and surveys of early and mail voters; they are preliminary and are adjusted as votes are counted. Race outcomes rest on the official count and calls by organisations such as the Associated Press.
