Vermont Election Day: Gov. Scott Faces Janoo as Nearly 131,000 Absentee Ballots Come Back
In Vermont, polls in at least 19 towns opened at 7 a.m. on November 3, with some towns opening later, up to 10 a.m.; clerks in towns with more than 1,000 registered voters had to keep polls open within 30 minutes of the start. Republican Gov. Phil Scott, seeking re-election, faced Democrat and state Sen. Amanda Janoo, and Republican U.S. House and legislative seats were also before voters. Early voting was well advanced: nearly 131,000 voters had returned ballots by October 28, and the total was expected to exceed 180,000. Per capita, the towns returning the most absentee ballots included St. Albans Town, Williston, Guildhall (nearly 600), North Hero, Dummerston, Shelburne, Charlotte, Marlboro and Ripton. Vermont law allows town clerks to process absentee ballots as they arrive but not to count them before Election Day. Same-day registration let eligible residents register and vote on November 3, and mail ballots had to arrive before polls closed.
