Texas Early Voting Hits a Record 7.7 Million Ballots as the Senate Race Stays Tight
Texas held its general election on November 3, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and voters in line at 7 p.m. still able to vote. In the Senate race, Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton faced Democratic state Sen. James Talarico; for governor, Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, seeking re-election, faced Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa. Early voting set records: by the close on October 31, about 7.7 million Texans had voted early, roughly 40.5% of registered voters. In Lubbock County alone, 80,977 people voted early, a record for the past 20 years, with the heaviest early-voting days on October 30, 23 and 29. The latest polling showed a tight Senate race, with Talarico leading Paxton 50-43, while Hinojosa edged Abbott 48-47 in the governor's race. Texas voters could vote at any vote center in their county rather than only at an assigned precinct, and were urged to verify their polling place and registration and bring valid photo ID or an accepted alternative.
