More Than 1.28 Million Tennesseans Voted Early as Federal Observers Deploy to Shelby County
Tennessee voters went to the polls on November 3 to choose a new governor, a U.S. senator, all U.S. House members and the Legislature, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern); voters in line at closing could still vote. In the governor's race, Republican Marsha Blackburn faced Democrat Jerri Green and 13 independent candidates to succeed term-limited Gov. Bill Lee. In the Senate race, Republican Sen. Bill Hagerty, seeking re-election, faced Democrat Shannon Bradshaw, who was also the party's 2018 Senate nominee. Early voting ended October 29, and the Secretary of State reported more than 1.28 million early ballots, about 27% of registered voters, including about 232,000 Democrats, 761,000 Republicans and 297,000 unaffiliated voters. Voters had to bring a valid state- or federally issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, passport, military ID or photo veterans card; IDs expired within 90 days were still acceptable, while student IDs, county or city library cards, city employee cards and temporary licenses were not. There was no Election Day registration outside narrow statutory exceptions for mail ballots. The U.S. Department of Justice sent election observers to Shelby County, the first federal observers there since 2018.
