Nevada's Governor's Race Is a Dead Heat as Lombardo Faces Ford and Reno Picks a New Mayor
Nevada polls were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on November 3, with voters in line at 7 p.m. still able to vote, deciding the governorship, U.S. House seats and local offices. The governor's race was one of the nation's closest: Republican incumbent Joe Lombardo faced Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford, with polls showing the two nearly tied; a Ford win would give Democrats control of the Assembly, the Senate and the governor's office at once. Reno chose its first new mayor in 12 years, with Kate Marshall and Kathleen Taylor competing to succeed three-term Mayor Hillary Schieve. Nevada's 2nd Congressional District was also unusually competitive, with Republican David Flippo facing Democrat Teresa Benitez-Thompson and Independent American Lynn Chapman. In Washoe County, November 3 was a teacher professional-development day with students off, and many schools served as vote centers; DMV offices extended hours on November 2 and 3, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., to help with registration. Same-day registration was available with a valid Nevada driver's license or state ID.
