More Than 2.4 Million Michiganders Voted Early, About a Third of Registered Voters
Michigan polls opened at 7 a.m. on November 3 as voters decided a new governor, a U.S. senator, control of the Legislature and two statewide proposals. The Secretary of State's office reported that more than 2.4 million people had already voted before polls opened, including just under 1.7 million returned absentee ballots and more than 750,000 in-person early votes, about 33% of the state's 7.4 million registered voters. At Plumbrook Elementary in Sterling Heights, 52-year-old Cindy McClary voted early in the morning; at a West Bloomfield polling place the parking lot was nearly full by 8:10 a.m. Michigan lets eligible residents register at their clerk's office on Election Day and vote; polls stayed open until 8 p.m., with anyone in line by 8 p.m. able to vote. Voters could check registration and polling places through the Michigan Voter Information Center, and absentee ballots had to reach local clerks by 8 p.m. to count.
