Rice University Lecture on November 4 to Tell the Story of the Houston Asian American Archive

The Rice University business school's fall "Houston Impact Series" lecture will be held on the evening of November 4 at McNair Hall on the Rice campus in Houston, Harris County, Texas. The speaker is Dr. Anne Chao, co-founder and manager of the Houston Asian American Archive, on how the Asian community's courage and resilience shaped today's Houston. The talk runs from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a reception. The moderator is Dr. Portia Hopkins, Rice University's historian. Chao, a scholar of modern Chinese history, graduated from Wellesley College and earned her doctorate in modern Chinese history at Rice; she is an adjunct lecturer in the humanities at Rice and manages the Houston Asian American Archive.

The archive has long collected and preserved historical materials from local Asian families, businesses and organizations, including oral histories, photographs and documents, helping researchers and the public understand how Asian immigrants put down roots, built businesses and joined community life in Houston. Chao's research focuses on Chinese immigrant history, and her work joins academic scholarship with community memory, so that the archive is not material locked in a vault but a shared history later generations can consult and retell.

Organizers said the lecture is part of the "Exemplary Stories of Leadership within Community" series, which presents how leaders of different backgrounds have driven the city's development. For Houston's Chinese community, archival work carries special meaning: if the stories of early immigrants are not recorded in time, they will disappear with their generation. The lecture is free and open to the public, and residents interested in local history and the Asian community are welcome.
