KYIV, Ukraine — Rescue work continued on Tuesday, November 3, in the village of Komyshuvakha in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday morning that the attack was "one of the deadliest attacks of this war." Semikin told Ukraine's national television broadcast on Tuesday that Russia used KAB-500 and FAB-3000 aerial bombs in the attack, and that a FAB-3000 carries nearly 1.5 tons of explosive material and is primarily designed to destroy heavy concrete fortifications and bunkers. The shelter that was hit was a newly built, EU-funded reinforced basement constructed last year to keep classes going during wartime and now used by local authorities as an administrative center and humanitarian hub; the force of the bombs still collapsed its concrete structure and set it on fire. Ukrainian police named the four officers killed as Mykhailo Buzhenko, Mykola Balanda, Mykhailo Romanov and Dmytro Besedin. The two rescue workers killed, Denys Konovalenko and Oleksiy Sushchevsky, both 44, had rushed to the scene after the first strike and were killed in the follow-up strike.
Russia's Defence Ministry commented on the attack for the first time on Tuesday, saying in a statement that it had targeted Ukrainian military units in areas around Komyshuvakha and two other settlements, and that up to 25 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed, with 15 vehicles and an electronic warfare station destroyed. Ukrainian officials say the site was the point where residents collected humanitarian aid every week, and that the second wave of bombs hit the shelter where people had taken cover directly.
Matthias Schmale, the United Nations' top aid official in Ukraine, condemned the attack. The bombing came after a six-day ceasefire evacuation operation in the southern city of Oleshky and amid a renewed push by the United States for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
